Product Description Not everyone needs an embedded tuner in a flat panel LCD TV, and the U series "tuner less" feature gives you the flexibility to use your own set top box in combination with the KLV-40U100M monitor from Sony. This monitor features high styling and performance along with HDMI connectivity in a popular space-saving bottom speaker design, enhancing even the most sophisticated decor.
Amazon.com Product Description The sleekly styled, silver 40-inch Sony Bravia KLV40U100M is packed with the latest high-performance video features, including a wide viewing angle, and a fast response time (great for sports and action movies). Designed to receive HD and standard TV signals via set top boxes (cable or satellite), the KLV40U100M is a tunerless model providing exceptional value and performance for those who have a set-top HD-tuner or do not intend to receive over-th-air broadcasts. It also offers digital HDMI video connectivity and a bottom speaker design that helps save space. The thin profile of this Bravia TV accommodates VESA compliant mounting systems (separately available). The removable pedestal swivels 30 degrees left and right and also tilts forward 3 degrees and backward 8 degrees for additional placement flexibility. The KLV40U100M has a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, 178-degree viewing angle, and 1300:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) The Cinemotion 3:2 pulldown cinema video processing detects and compensates film--which is shot at 24 frames per second (fps) compared with video's 30 fps rate--to video for a smooth theaterlike experience at home. THis set includes the following connections: - Composite (RCA audio/video): 2 inputs (rear)
- S-Video: 2 input (rear) with input detection
- Component (Y/Pb/Pr): 2 inputs (with left/right audio jacks)
- HDMI: 1 input (with L/R RCA audio connections)
- PC: 1 D-Sub15 input (with L/R stereo mini plug connection)
- Total audio inputs: 3 (rear)
- Headphone: 1
Tech Talk HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV). Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound. The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system. And in case you were wondering, BRAVIA is short for "Best Resolution Audio Visual Integrated Architecture." What's in the Box 40-inch Bravia Tunerless LCD HD monitor, tabletop stand, remote control (with batteries), coaxial cable, HD15-to-HD15 cable, printed operating instructions Warranty 1 year for parts and labor; in-home diagnostic warranty service for one year (for LCD TVs from the Bravia U-Series and S-Series measuring over 30 inches)

Bravia - Bravo! Sony does it again December 27, 2006 R. Goltsch (West Caldwell, NJ USA) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
This television is my second Sony TV. The first was a 27" Sony Wega I got three years ago for Christmas. My brother labeled that one as, "A Stop and Stare Picture." Fast forward three years to my new TV. The 40" tv is huge compared to the 27". And while the picture of the standard definition Wega was great, this TV is in another league.
Sure, all high def TV's look great compared to standard TV. But when we were researching this purchase, we vsited many stores and compared this TV's screen to those of units from LG, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, as well as many others. We just found that the Sony had a more pleasant picture.
"Pleasant" is strictly a subjective, user defined term. Your idea of a good picture will probably differ from mine, so until you see for yourself, you'll have to trust me.
Sony advertises this line, the Bravia, as the first TV for both men and women. Men will like the picture, women will like the aesthetics of the unit itself. Truth be told, I thought an LG with its black border around the screen looked slightly nicer when the TV was off, but the picture just wasn't as good. And let's face it, who compares TV's when they are turned off?
The remote for this TV is a little thing. Since this TV is without a tuner, there aren't a lot of buttons. It is perfectly functional, but not anywhere near as fancy as some remotes I have seen.
One feature I really like is you can name the various inputs. No more scrolling through Video 1, Video 2, etc. With this TV you can name them Satellite, DVD, Tivo, Etc. Whatever name you can come up with. You can also have it skip inputs that are not used so when you scroll through them with the DirecTV remote, you only see the inputs you use.
The listing for this TV is a little off when it counts the inputs. Don't get me wrong, this television has plenty of inputs, it just doesn't have all they list above. My televison has the following:
1 HDMI input - With R/L Sound
1 VGA Input - With one sound input
2 Composite Video Inputs - each with R/L sound and one s video input
1 Component (YPbPr) Video Input - With R/L Sound
I hooked my new DirecTV HD PVR to this Television through the HDMI input and have gotten some great images. The manual says that is the best image, and I have to say it is the best I have seen in my home.
My XBox 360 is hooked up currently through the component inputs while I am waiting for my VGA cable to be delivered. Without the HD cable, the stock Xbox 360 does not output to HD, therefore I cannot comment on the HD image with the Xbox. I can tell you that the game still looks pretty darn good in standard definition on this TV.
Some reviews I have read about other televisions is that while they look great in HD, the SD picture leaves a lot to be desired. I find on my DirecTV system, which is 100% digital, some of the SD channels do look fairly bad if you try to stretch the image out and use the full widescreen mode on a 4:3 image (I'll let others explain all the modes of this television as I am still learning what they all mean: 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i all are available on this unit.
While it has only been a few short days with this TV, I have had a chance to watch a wide variety of programming with it. Over the weekend I had the opportunity to watch a few football games and was amazed at the HD image shown on screen compared to SD. Watching a football player cut back on the turf at Mile High Stadium showed the small pieces of grass he kicked up as he did so. I never noticed that before on regular TV.
Now, some may find this last observation strange (At least my wife does).... I watched an episode of Hogan's Heroes in HD on Universal HD. A scene in Colonel Klink's office showed me something I never noticed over the last 30 years of seeing these episodes in reruns: The colonel has a detailed map of Stalag 13 on his wall behind his desk. I never saw this before. Maybe it was just because I was looking for something new, but I was surprised at the clarity of even these old shows in HD.
Sure, it's a strange observation......but it just gives you an idea on the quality of the picture from my new Sony Bravia.
Great tv June 4, 2007 G (Pittsburgh) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have had this tv for a couple of weeks and it has performed very well so far. HD picture quality is incredible. SD picture quality is pretty good. For now that's the trade off. I was pleasantly surprised by the sound quality of the speakers too.
I had trouble figuring out how to take off the stand as well. Curiously it's not even mentioned in the manual. Over the phone customer support was completely useless. I found out how to remove the stand after some digging on the Sony website. You DO NOT have to remove the entire back panel to take off the stand as stated by another reviewer. That is what Sony told me over the phone and I didn't buy it. There are 10 screws on the back of the tv near the center at the bottom. The 8 screws closest to the bottom center of the tv have to be removed and then the stand can be pulled off.
Very pleased!! February 6, 2007 Brutus Buckeye (Delaware) I just bought this TV at a great price. I think the quality of the tv is excellent. The only complaint I have is the difficulty I had removing the pedestal/stand that was included. You have to remove the entire back panel just to get to 5 screws. I called Sony and they had no idea how to remove it. But I got it off and purchased a cheap mounting bracket online and I am stoked about my new TV. Hope this helps.
Great Picture and High Def. Too! October 2, 2007 Gabriel E. Lobsinger (MI, USA) I bought this LCD screen a while back and it is in excellent condition. The one I bought is this same exact model. The remote is simple and the features are easy to use. It is very basic and great for everything. It's a good screen and I love mine. It's a good one if you're looking!
